Pastor
Kanisha Billingsley identified her purpose at the age of twelve. She wrote in
her journal: “I pray that I never forget
today because I think I realize part of my purpose here on earth. I think my
purpose is to talk to people […] and to [lead] them to God (05.24.1996).” This
mission statement continues to propel her forward in surrender and obedience. Kanisha’s
call to pastoral ministry was evident when she began preaching and teaching as
a teenager. She remained committed during her ministerial journey as the first
and only female minister in a rural Baptist congregation. Her internal knowing
of God’s plans for her life manifested in her willingness to preach regardless
and to serve despite resistance. Pastor
Kanisha went on to blaze new trails for women in ministry becoming the first
woman on the ministerial staff and, subsequently, the first to preach an
initial sermon (trial sermon for licensure).
Pastor Kanisha is a scholar, creative spirit, and a visionary. She obtained a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications Studies from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Kanisha received both a Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Theology concentrating in Homiletics from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Kanisha’s research interests include Womanist Theory, African American Religious Experience, and Rhetorical Ethics. Her academic performance along with her continued commitment to ecclesial ministry led to her selection as a Leadership Fellow for The Office of Black Women in Church and Society, a Lilly endowed Program at The Interdenominational Theological Center.
Her ministry is best understood as a fusion of creativity, spirituality, and intellect. In 2012, she formed DreamSeeds Group. DreamSeeds Group is Kanisha’s corporate womb space through which she births her Soul’s intent as an author, Dare to Dream Again Worth-shop Facilitator, and a Spiritual Midwife. Within the first three years of her entrepreneurial journey, Kanisha published her “fear-breaker” book: You Are God’s Dream-A Collection of Life Giving Affirmations. She wrote, produced, and directed a spiritual-theatrical experience: My Naked Self: A One Wom[b]an Show. She also launched an inspirational blog series: A Life Giving Moment which is an empowerment series designed to increase self-awareness and expand spiritual consciousness. Her second book is scheduled for release in fall 2015. You can also listen to her as a co-host on the “Jacquelyn Anthony Bryant Radio Show.” Each endeavor encapsulates her liberating mantra:
In the grand scheme of things, your life, regardless of pain and difficulty, is an unfolding miracle. Your life is the coming of a dream. Your life is the co-creative component of the Divine birthing process that happens within human consciousness and lived experiences [...]-K.L.Billingsley
On March 8, 2015, Pastor Kanisha took another leap of faith and established Dream Life Fellowship in Atlanta, Georgia. Dream Life Fellowship exists as an open space at the crossroads of potential and manifestation where Dreamers unite in their quest to grow deeper and broader. Dream Life Fellowship provides a life giving church experience by fostering authentic relationships with real people, empowering dreamers through relevant messages, and impacting the world through service by executing radical ideas.
Rev. Billingsley is a purpose-driven leader. She is committed to assisting others in their journey for wholeness while echoing the sentiments expressed by the writer in 1Thessalonians 5:23-24: "May the God of peace strengthen you and make you whole. May your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound [nothing missing and nothing broken]. The One [who created you] and calls you is faithful and will do this!"
Pastor Kanisha is on a life-giving “love-journey” with her supportive husband Chris C. Davis. Together they serve as an example of partnership and commitment.
